Alliance Française de Dhaka in Uttara, Dhaka

L'Alliance Française (French pronunciation: [aljɑ̃s fʁɑ̃sɛz], French Alliance), or AF, is an international organization that aims to promote French language and culture around the world. Created in Paris on 21 July 1883 under the name Alliance française pour la propagation de la langue nationale dans les colonies et à l'étranger (French alliance for the propagation of the national language in the colonies and abroad) — now known simply as Alliance française — its primary concern is teaching French as a second language and is headquartered in Paris.[1] In 2014, the Alliance has 850 centers in 137 countries, on five continents.[2]

The Alliance was created in Paris on 21 July 1883 by a group of eminent men, including the scientist Louis Pasteur, the diplomat Ferdinand de Lesseps, the writers Jules Verne and Ernest Renan, and the publisher Armand Colin.
It finances most of its activities from the fees it receives from its courses and from rental of its installations. The French government also provides a subsidy covering approximately five percent of its budget (nearly 665,000 in 2003)
More than 440,000 students learn French at one of the centres run by the Alliance, whose network of schools includes:
  • a centre in Paris, Alliance Française Paris Ile-de-France
  • locations throughout France for foreign students and
  • 1,016 locations in 135 countries.
The organizations outside Paris are local, independently run franchises. Each has a committee and a president. The Alliance Française brand is owned by the Paris centre. In many countries, the Alliance Française of Paris is represented by a Délégué général. The French Government also runs 150 separate French Cultural Institutes that exist to promote French language and culture.[3]

Recognition

In 2005, along with the Società Dante Alighieri, the British Council, the Goethe-Institut, the Instituto Cervantes, and the Instituto Camões, the Alliance française was awarded the Prince of Asturias Award for outstanding achievements in communications and the humanities.
GOALS
Alliance Française has 3 goals: 1) offer courses in French, in France and in the world, to all sections of society 2) promote French culture and cultures of French-speaking countries better and in all dimensions 3) encourage cultural diversity and bring into focus all cultures
FORMATION
In 2007, the Fondation de l’Alliance Française (Alliance Française Foundation) is formed and recognized as a public utility. The Fondation de l’Alliance Française is the moral and legal reference of all the Alliances Françaises in the world. When one Alliance is formed, it asks the Fondation to recognize it, through an approval of its statutes.
In 2008, the international network of Alliance Française is composed by 1,071 Alliances Françaises in 136 countries, 8,000 professors and 461,377 students. Nearly 6 million people attend cultural activities organized by the Alliances Françaises each year.
Every Alliance Française is operated under local legislation and is managed by a committee made up of prominent personalities in respective countries.
